Pennington School hosts third annual Derby Tea Party in honor of Women's History Month

The auditorium at Pennington School was transformed last week into an elegant tea room, where over 90 young ladies were served words of wisdom and encouragement from five esteemed local panelists during the third annual Women’s History Month Derby Tea Party Celebration.

The panel consisted of women from diverse backgrounds including:

  • LaJuan White, Assistant Superintendent for Student Personnel Services
  • Telisha White, Realtor
  • Danielle Faulkner, Owner of Tastee Treats
  • Stacia Johnson, teacher at Pennington
  • Virginie Beauvoir, Domestic Violence Intelligence Officer

Leading up to the panel, students met once a week after school for four weeks to participate in etiquette classes, where they learned how to properly sit while dining, what types of conversation are appropriate or inappropriate at the dinner table and what attire is proper to wear.

During the panel discussion, students had the opportunity to ask the panelists prewritten questions, including:

  • What level of education is needed for your career?
  • What is the best part about being a woman?
  • What made you want to inspire young girls?
  • What is the best part of your job?
  • Why did you pick your job?
  • Would you recommend your job to young ladies?
  • What is something you would tell your younger self now?
  • How do you keep going when things get hard?

“I hope they're able to take away the power that was in that panel, because there was a great deal of power,” Ms. White said.

The panelists provided insightful feedback and shared personal experiences of how they overcame challenges and adversity. The event concluded with lite bites and refreshments as students continued to mingle with each other and guests.

“My favorite part was either them asking the questions because I wanted to hear what they have to say, or us eating,” said eighth-grader Mikayla Young. “What stood out to me is when she (Ms. White) said that she likes it when her students come back to her after a lot of years.”

Last week, Pennington students created collages about heart health and self-love in Joann Torregrossa's art room, with the help of school counselor Bianca Gentile-Doyle. Students discussed the concept of self-care and love along with the theme of Heart Health to tie into the PE team's obstacle course and fundraiser.
