Grade 5
Units & Goals
Grade 5 Math
In Math 5, instructional time should focus on three areas:
(1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions);
(2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimals into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations; and
(3) developing understanding of volume.
Please note that while every standard/topic in the grade level has not been included in this overview, all standards should be included in instruction.
1 - Understand place value
2 - Add and subtract decimals to hundredths
3 - Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers
4 - Use models and strategies to multiply decimals
5 - Use models and strategies to divide whole numbers
6 - Use models and strategies to divide decimals
7 - Use equivalent fractions to add and subtract
8 - Apply understanding of multiplication to multi
9 - Apply understanding of division to divide fractions
10 - Understand volume concepts
11 - Convert measurements
12 - Represent and interpret data
13 - Write and interpret numerical expressions
14 - Graph points on the coordinate plane
15 - Algebra: analyze patterns and relationships

17 – Step up to grade 6
Grade 6: 1 – use positive rational numbers
Grade 5 Science
This course focuses on understanding the properties of matter, how matter changes, and how matter moves through an ecosystem. The curriculum also covers Earth’s interacting systems, focusing on natural resources and protecting them. Other major course topics are gravitational force, the sun and stars, and the effect of Earth’s rotation on the patterns seen in the night sky.
Unit 1 What is matter made of?
Unit 2 From matter to organisms
Unit 3 Interacting earth systems
Unit 4 Patterns in the night sky
